It's not a sea sponge. It's a gourd.
Most people are surprised by this. Your loofah started as a vegetable growing on a vine in Colombia — a member of the cucumber family, harvested when it matures, peeled, seeded, and sun-dried until only the fibrous skeleton remains. Nothing is added.
Unbleached, the way it comes off the vine.
Most loofahs on the shelf have been chemically bleached to a uniform pale colour. Ours haven't. The natural blond-to-tan variation you see is the actual fiber — which means no chlorine residue against your skin, and no bleaching step that weakens the structure. Slightly firmer at first, and it softens with the first few uses.
