Most people assume a loofah is a sea sponge or a bit of moulded plastic. It's neither. It's a gourd — a relative of the cucumber — grown on a trellis, harvested when mature, then peeled, seeded and dried in the sun until only the fibrous interior is left.

Nearly every loofah sold in the US is anonymous — bought by weight from whoever was cheapest that season, blended, bleached, and bagged.

A loofah you can actually hold onto.
A whole dried gourd is awkward — bulky, slippery, slow to dry. So we cut ours flat, bound the edge in cotton so it won't shed, and put a strap on the back.
Slip your hand underneath. Nothing to grip, nothing to drop, and it reaches the places a loose sponge can't. Thin enough that it dries between showers, which is the whole reason loofahs go bad in the first place.
